Who Is Jesus Christ to You?

Welcome to the Follow Up and Summary of the 21 Days to Knowing Jesus Christ Bible Study. I hope that you enjoy this study and that it will be helpful to you in building a daily Bible study habit.

Listen to the audio version of today’s study HERE on Soundcloud.

We have spent a good amount of time studying the Gospel of John, chapter by chapter, and then reviewing the key concepts presented in the apostle John’s historical narrative. The message conveyed in this book is, by far, the most important message that there is. It is, without a doubt, the most important message you will ever hear because it is a message of eternal significance. It is a question of how one will spend all of eternity.

The format of today’s Bible study is a bit different from the rest of the ones we have done in this series. It is my desire to bring the teachings together from John’s Gospel and, after having read and reviewed the information contained in it, ask you the simple question:

“Who is Jesus Christ to You?”

In other words, after having heard the claims about Jesus and the words that He said about Himself in the pages of the Bible, who do you believe Jesus Christ to be?

There is a good chance that, if you have hung with me for the last twenty-eight daily sessions studying and reviewing the Gospel of John, you have already made up your mind about who Jesus Christ is. However, if you haven’t, I invite you to consider the following discussion as a summary to this study. Thank you so much for joining me in it.

Jesus Christ made some extraordinary, exclusive truth claims. Not least among them was the claim that He is THE way to God. Jesus did not say that He was one of many ways to God. He said that He was THE way. If He is THE way, then there is no other way. In John 14:6 He declares:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Jesus goes on to tell those who do not believe in Him, that they will die in their sins and that they are condemned.

John 8:23-24 “You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

John 3:18-19 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”

He makes it clear that one must be born again (spiritually) in order to see the kingdom of God.

John 3:3 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 3:5-7 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”

He declares that He has come to save the world.

John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

He goes on to explain that, not only is He THE way to the Father but, He is ONE with the Father. The Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are ONE in the Holy Trinity. In this sense, Jesus IS GOD, in that He is ONE with God. In John 10:30, among other places, He says:

“I and my Father are one.”

He demonstrated His power by His miraculous resurrection from the dead. In John 10:17, He says that He will take His life up again by the power given Him by His Father:

“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.”

Jesus tells us HOW we can have eternal life and an eternal relationship with Him:

John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

Jesus tells His followers how to live.

John 8:31-32 “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Jesus tells us that we cannot lose our relationship with Him.

John 10:27-29 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.”

Many today hear of Jesus Christ, reject His claim of deity, and will say that He is simply a wise philosopher or a profoundly good moral teacher. However, He has not given us that option. In the words of C.S. Lewis in his book “Mere Christianity”,

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [that is, Christ]: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse…. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

The Gospel of John is not just a chapter of a book, but it is a historical eyewitness account of the life and earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. It was written specifically for the purpose that by reading it we might “…believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through His name.”

As Lee Stroebel documents in his book “The Case for Christ”,

As prominent British theologian Michael Green said, “The appearances of Jesus are as well authenticated as anything in antiquity… There can be no rational doubt that they occurred, and that the main reason why Christians became sure of the resurrection in the earliest days was just this. They could say with assurance, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ They knew it was he.”

I intend to dig deeper into the reasons that we can trust the Bible and the historical accounts contained within it with the ongoing work of the Mars Hill Institute ministry.

My prayer for you is that you will 1) get to know Jesus Christ intimately through the words of the Bible, 2) that you will develop a deep saving personal relationship with Him and 3) that you will live your life in a way that He would be able to call you a true disciple.

Thank you again for joining us in this study and do continue to study along with us so that, in the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy in II Timothy 2:15, we might “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Read the Gospel of John here

As a Follow Up and Summary of the Gospel of John (Book of John), I went through and selected a Key Scripture Verse out of each Chapter of the Book. It wasn’t always easy to select just one passage but I think it was worthwhile to go through the exercise. The message conveyed in the Book of John is, by far, the most important message that there is. It is, without a doubt, the most important message you will ever hear. I hope that you will be inspired by the teachings contained within these passages. These Key Passages give you the basic Key Concepts to remember about the Gospel of John and its message.

So as not to present an overwhelming amount of information at one time, I thought it would be good to break up the passages and present three chapters at a time for review, discussion and meditation on.

Key Scripture Passages:

  • Chapter 19
John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
After the Jews rejected Pilate’s offer to release Jesus, he had Jesus severely beaten and then brought Him out again declaring that he had found no fault in Him at all. The chief priests and officers of the Jews cried out “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate questioned Jesus further and again, finding no fault in Him, sought to release Him. But the Jews protested saying “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.” Pilate asked them if he should crucify their King and they replied that they had no king except Caesar. Jesus was taken away to be hung on a rugged cross until death at a place called in the Hebrew language Golgotha (the Place of a Skull.) Pilate had a title placed on the cross saying JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS. When Jesus had been placed on the cross, the soldiers cast lots for His garments, fulfilling the Old testament prophecy of Psalm 22:18. After He had been given a taste of sour vinegar to quench His thirst, Jesus declared “It is finished.” And gave up His spirit. The soldiers pierced His side with a spear, to make sure He was dead, and took Him down from the cross. He was buried in a new tomb near the place where He was crucified.
  • Chapter 20
John 20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene visited the tomb early in the morning and saw that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran back, told the disciples and they came to the tomb to see what had happened. When Peter and another disciple arrived, they saw that the tomb was empty with the linen grave clothes still there. Mary returned to the tomb, weeping because she did not know what had been done with the body of Her Lord. As she was there, she found herself face to face with the risen Lord Jesus and He spoke with her. After this, she went back and told the disciples of what she had seen and heard. Later that day, Jesus appeared to the disciples (except Thomas, who wasn’t there) as they were gathered together and charged them “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” Eight days later, Jesus appears again to the disciples (this time including Thomas). He tells Thomas to examine His hands and feet where He had been nailed to the cross and, after Thomas expresses belief, says “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
  • Chapter 21
John 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberius. While a number of the disciples were in the Sea fishing, a man called to them from the shore and asked if they have caught anything. When they replied that they had not, He told them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. When they did this, they couldn’t pull the net out of the water because of the number of fish they had caught. They then realized that it was Jesus who was on the shore. When the disciples had come ashore, Jesus dined with them and conversed with them. He has a specific conversation with Peter regarding the future of the ministry. He asks Peter three times if he loves Him. Each time, when Peter assures Jesus that he does, He replies “Feed my lambs” or “Feed my sheep”, referring to His followers (as Jesus is the Good Shepherd). He also told Peter to “Follow Me” and indicated the way in which he would follow Jesus in being killed for his faith. This most significant chapter in this book of all books concludes with great words of encouragement and hope in testifying that the author of the book is an eyewitness to the events and that these things have been confirmed as being true.

Key Scripture Passages:

  • Chapter 16
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
In this chapter, Jesus continued imparting His timeless words of instruction and wisdom to His disciples. He tells them of tribulation and that the time is coming when those who kill them will think that they are doing God a service. Jesus tells His disciples that it is time for Him to go away, but it is to their advantage that He go so that the Holy Spirit might come. He tells them that He still has many things to tell them but that they are not yet ready to hear them. However, the Holy Spirit (the Helper, the Comforter, the Spirit of truth) will guide them into all truth and declare only the things that are of the Lord. Jesus promises that once He has gone, that He will come again and that His followers will have joy. Jesus assures them that whatever they ask the Father (God) in His (Jesus’) name, they will receive that their joy may be full. We wouldn’t ask something in Jesus’ name that He wouldn’t approve of but rather we should ask in accordance with His teachings. He closes His statements in this chapter by telling the disciples that they will be scattered but that He has told them the things He has that they might have peace in the times to come.
  • Chapter 17
John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
After Jesus had given His disciples instruction, He took time to pray to the Father for Himself, for His disciples, and for all believers in general. Jesus asked God that, as He has finished the work of communicating the hope of eternal life that God has given Him to do, that He might be glorified and restored to the glory that He had with the Father before the world came into existence. He prays for the disciples that they might be one, unified as Jesus and the Father are. He prays for the disciples that they might be kept from the evil one and finally that they might be set aside and dedicated (sanctified) to the truth of God. Finally, He prays to the Father for all believers yet to come and asks God that they might be one (unified) in the same manner as Jesus and the Father. He asks the Father that they may be made perfect in one and that the world would know that God had sent them and know that they are loved of God as God loved Him. He asks the Father that those who believe in Him may be with Him where He will be and see His glory.
  • Chapter 18
John 18:37 For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.
After Jesus had finished praying, He and His disciples went out over the Brook Kidron into a garden where they encountered Judas Iscariot and a detachment of troops sent to arrest Jesus. The troops arrest Jesus, bind Him and take Him to Annas, the father in law of Jewish high priest Caiaphas. It is at this time that Peter, the most outspoken of Jesus’ disciples denies being associated with Him. Jesus is questioned by Annas and then taken to Caiaphas. Jesus is then taken to the Roman Praetorium to be questioned by Pontius Pilate. Pilate asked Jesus if he was the King of the Jews? Jesus responded that His kingdom is not of this world and went on to say “For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate responds with the famous phrase “Quid Est Veritas” or “What is Truth?” After questioning Jesus, Pilate declares to the Jews that He has found no fault in Him at all and offers to release Him in accordance with Roman tradition of releasing a Jewish prisoner on the Passover. The Jews reject His offer and ask that He release Barrabas the robber instead.

Key Scripture Passages:

  • Chapter 13
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
As the feast of the Passover approached, Jesus knew that His time was coming when He would depart from this world and go to His Father. He had just had supper with the disciples and He set an example for them, that they didn’t understand at the time, by washing their feet. Certain of the disciples objected to Jesus washing their feet and probably thought instead that they should serve Him by washing His feet instead. When Jesus had finished, He explained to them that He was setting the example of the way that they ought to serve each other and went on to say “Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them”. After Judas Iscariot had left the group to betray Jesus, He told the rest of the disciples who were still with Him “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
  • Chapter 14
John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
In this chapter, Jesus makes an exclusive truth claim that differentiates Him from all other teachers and religious leaders. In verse 6, Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Here Jesus, by saying “the” way, “the” truth and “the” life, is excluding all others. Jesus is making the claim that He is the only way to God. His truth represents the only full truth. He makes the explicit statement that there is no other way to the Father but through Him. This is especially relevant in today’s culture of relativism and the common assertion by many that all religions are equally true and are all different paths to God. Here Jesus eliminates that possibility. If He is the only way to God, it is not possible that any other teaching or religion with conflicting truth claims can be a way to God at all. If Jesus is THE way to the Father, then it is not possible that any other teacher or religious leader can also be the way or even a way. It is one or the other, and there is ample evidence that Jesus’ truth claims are historically reliable.
  • Chapter 15
John 15:20 A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.
Jesus begins this chapter likening Himself to a vine and the disciples as branches. He says in verse 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” He emphasizes how closely the follower is dependent on His power. Later in the chapter, He tells His disciples that “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you.” And encourages them to follow His example by loving one another. He tells them that there is no greater love than to lay one’s life down for his friends (referring to His own coming sacrifice). In the latter part of the chapter, He shows another aspect of the relationship of the disciple to the Himself. In verse 20, He says “A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” We often think that the believer’s life will be easy. While we share in His power and His unrivaled love, we also may share in the persecution that comes from those who hate the light. He gives the believer comfort in knowing that if the world hates us, it is because it hated Him first.
